Merry Christmas Jacob!

I sat here as tears pooled and my throat tightened while I looked at photographs of Jacob. His plight brought back unwanted memories of my difficult time at M. D. Anderson's Cancer Center.

I thought working third shift would act as insulation between me and the sick people who were always asleep when I showed up for work. It didn't work. I filled out toe tags, passed tiny IV bags hanging on doors for the small patients on the other side; there were blood bank runs, hearing codes being called, seeing my friend Gary, an orderly carrying a young body . . . It was just as painful returning after a day off and discovering a patient or patients had died in my absence.

I walked off the job the night our supervisor chose me to work the children's unit. When we were hired, we were told we wouldn't have to work a unit that might cause problems for us personally. The children's unit was the deal breaker for me.

So. Here's my chance to atone for having been such a coward. Christmas is my favorite holiday too. And I can do penguin. It might look like an ordinary berd wearing a tux, but yes, I can draw a penguin--at least one penguin, on a greeting card, for Jacob. And I will. Will you send a card too? Because if we do, we'll be a little bit like penguins. We'll "dive into life, find warmth among friends, appreciate snow days, take long walks, stand together, go the extra mile, and keep our cool," like it says penguins do in "Advice from a Penguin."

    1. I understand your feelings. He brought to mind all the children I used to see at the cancer and research hospital I worked at. Children's Hospital was near by so it was like getting a double whammy every time I went to work. I pray the child doesn't have to suffer too much. Thank you so much.
