Owney at the Smithsonian

I read bits from the Smithsonian Magazine before bedtime last night. I like it as much as I like Nat Geo. Imagine my delight at the discovery of the story about Owney. Have you read it?

It starts out cute and sweet. Then it takes a startling turn right before the end. It's a real tear jerker. Then you just get ticked off. It's so typical of how Americans treat their heroes. They build them up, just to tear them down. Or maybe it's just me. I have a weakness for pets, and I think Owney deserved a better ending.

Who will join me on a rescue mission? I think he should be given a proper burial, just as I think all the human remains should be interred. Poor Owney. I hope you'll read the story. Why not buy the magazine, if you don't subscribe? It's chock-full of great reads.

Hats off to Owney. Buy more Owney stamps first though, okay? It really was a dog's life.

  1. Yes I have read the story and it makes me sad what happened to him and how hateful his end was .God has a special place in hell for people who mistreat others and animals . God also had and has a special place and I believe Owney is there .I will leave it at that .

  2. phonelady, you are something else. :) See? You are so like Lucy! LOL! Absolutely wonderful.

It doesn't matter how often I read about him, I still get emotional.
